Australia’s City of Gold Coast water laboratory has become the first to gain NATA accreditation for

Press release

Kingston, Ontario – April 17, 2019

Australia’s City of Gold Coast laboratory has received NATA accreditation to test for enterococci using Canadian technology from TECTA-PDS. The rapid, automated test, used successfully during the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games to test recreational water leading up to specific Games events, is now part of the laboratory’s regular testing.

The TECTA-PDS rapid microbial detection system, TECTA-B16, is the only automated US EPA approved method for drinking water compliance testing in the world, offering extreme ease-of-use to laboratories and customers around the world. The portability and complete testing capabilities, including automated interpretation of results and email reports, provides laboratory grade enterococci results for the Gold Coast. During the 2018 Commonwealth Games the City’s laboratory was able to start the test at 3 am and get full results by 3 pm the same day, well before events started.

The TECTA-B16 instrument was supplied through TECTA-PDS’ regional distributor, Thermo Fisher Scientific. Tim Adams, TECTA-PDS’ EVP says adding the Enterococci test for recreational water applications to the list of our accredited tests is enormous.

“Now, we can provide all the benefits that our drinking and wastewater customers see to the entire bathing, recreational and marine market,” he said. “It’s been a pleasure working with the City of Gold Coast and we look forward to working with them on improving and innovating water testing for years to come.”

Director of Water and Waste for the City of Gold Coast, Paul Heaton, said the City would benefit from the ease-of-use, rapid results and portability of the new technology for its recreational water samples.

About TECTA-PDS

TECTA-PDS was formed in 2003 as Pathogen Detection Systems as a direct result of the Walkerton (Ontario, Canada) disaster in which 7 people died and several thousand became ill as a result of fecal contamination of drinking water. Working together, researchers at Queen’s University and industry specialists set the goal of revolutionizing current microbiological monitoring standards in which the tried-and-true testing methods that, although deemed the gold standard, were decades old, unreliable and simply inadequate to protect human health. TECTA-PDS today has evolved into a global organization having systems in over 35 countries and TECTA-PDS has revolutionized the way in which water is being tested around the world in both municipal and industrial environments. Over the years the core value of the company has never changed with a mission to be the most innovative organization in water monitoring and to ensure a Walkerton disaster never occurs again in any part of the world.
